Have You Chosen The Right Ladder for the Job?

Have You Chosen The Right Ladder for the Job?

Totalsite Supplies |

Ladders are one of the most useful and versatile tools on site — when used correctly, they help you work efficiently, safely, and with confidence. The key is making sure you’ve got the right ladder for the job and that it’s kept in good working order.

Choosing the right Ladder

Selecting the right ladder is all about matching the tool to the task—and getting that match right means safer, smarter work on‐site. First, pick a ladder style suited to the job - platform ladder, extension ladder, multi-purpose etc - based on whether the work is indoors, outdoors, at height, or in a confined space.

Then check height and reach: the ladder must be long enough so you don’t need to over‐reach or perch dangerously near the top.   Consider load and duty rating—this includes your weight, tools, materials, and how often the ladder will be used.

Also think about material: if you’re working near electrical hazards, choose a non-conductive fibreglass model.  If you are you working on uneven ground,  choose a ladder with levelling feet.

A ladder with a built-in tool holder or tray is another smart choice, keeping your hands free while climbing

Choosing correctly means you equip your team for confidence, productivity and safety every time.

Using Your Ladder Safely

Before you step on, ensure your ladder is on a stable, level surface, free from slippery substances or nearby traffic.  Climb carefully—face the ladder, stay centred between the side rails, and maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand) at all times.

One of the most common — and dangerous — ladder mistakes is overreaching. It’s easy to do when you’re trying to finish a quick job, but leaning too far to one side shifts your centre of balance and can cause the ladder to tip unexpectedly.

Are the Ladders Inspected and in Suitable Condition?

A ladder in good condition is a ladder you can trust. Regular inspections by a competent person help identify wear and tear before it becomes a problem — from worn feet or bent rungs to missing labels.

Regular inspections and tagging aren’t just paperwork — they’re proof that your site takes safety seriously.

The Bottom Line

Ladders remain one of the most useful access tools in the industry — when chosen, used, and maintained correctly.  By taking a few simple steps, you’ll not only satisfy WorkSafe’s requirements but keep your team productive and protected.
