Frequently Asked Questions

What concrete tools do you stock?

We stock finishing trowels, pool trowels, walking trowels, hand floats, bull floats, screeds, concrete rakes and spreaders, edgers, groovers, scarifiers, finishing brooms and tool handles. We also carry the everyday site gear that goes with a pour, such as shovels, wheelbarrows, levels and measuring tools, along with adjustable formwork braces and LVL (laminated veneer lumber) for concrete boxing.

Which brands of concrete tools do you sell?

We sell Marshalltown, Masterfinish, Ox Tools, Kraft and Kea. Kea Concrete Tools is our own brand. Marshalltown is still the industry leader, and Kea is a comparable alternative at a more budget friendly price.

What hand tools do I need to finish a concrete slab?

For most slabs you'll need a rake or spreader to place the concrete, a screed to level it, a bull float to smooth the surface, an edger and groover for edges and joints, and a finishing trowel for the final finish. A concrete broom gives a non-slip surface on paths and driveways, and a concrete grid roller imprints a non-slip surface for dairy sheds and feed lots.

What equipment is used alongside hand tools?

Most contractors also use equipment such as power trowels, power screeds and concrete vibrators, which remove air bubbles from the pour. You'll find these in our Construction & Civil Equipment range. For the boxing, we supply adjustable formwork braces and LVL.

What's the difference between a bull float and a finishing trowel?

A bull float is used straight after screeding to flatten and smooth a large area from a long handle. A finishing trowel is used later, once the concrete has firmed up, to give a smooth, hard final surface.

Do you sell handles, brackets and replacement parts?

Yes. We stock concrete tool handles, bull float brackets, adaptors and handle fittings, so you can replace a part without buying a whole new tool.

Can I buy concrete tools in store?

Yes. Our Timaru, Christchurch and Auckland branches all stock the full range, and you can also buy online with delivery across New Zealand.
